Museum of Art and History, Geneva
Perhaps the best known museum in Geneva is the Museum of Art and
History. This massive museum which was built between 1903 and 1910
covers 7,000 square meters and is brim full of exhibits and pieces.
The museum is split into three separate sections: Fine Arts, Applied
Arts and Archaeology.
The archaeology section is home to everything from prehistoric
through Egyptian, Greek and Etruscan to Roman times. The Fine arts
section is home to over 400 works of art which date from contemporary
times back to the Renaissance and include works from such famous
artists as Renoir, Monet, Sistley, Pissaro, Cezanne, Modigliani,
Chagall, Picasso among many others. Also included in this section
are works from Swiss artists such as Hodler. The Museum of Art History
is open 6 days a week (closed Monday) from 10 am to 5pm.
Museum of Ethnography, Geneva
Home to over 60,000 artifacts, the Museum of Ethnography, Geneva
is recognized as being one of the most significant museums in not
just Geneva, but also in Switzerland and much further a field. When
you visit the Museum of Ethnography you will find more than 50,000
photographs, a collection of 20,000 books combined with many thousands
of documents that have been collected.
The building which houses the Museum of Ethnography is cleverly
designed in so far as that it is split up into five sections, each
section gives you an insight into the cultural history of a continent.
Among the exhibits of most note are Africa, Amazon, Australia, Japan,
China and Nepal. The Museum of Ethnography is open six days a week
(closed on Mondays) from 10 am to 5 pm and is easily accessible
on buses number 1 to 4.
