Ariana Museum, Geneva
The Ariana Museum, Geneva is the place to go if you are hoping to
see one of the worlds best collections of ceramics and glass. In
total the museum houses 16,000 items which include earthenware,
porcelain and pottery. On top of the 16,000 items afore mentioned
there is also a vast collection of 2,000 glass pieces which are
a combination of engraved, blown and molded glass. The collection
is made up of pieces that date back 700 years and gives a great
sense of time in so far as that you can travel from medieval times
to cotemporary work all under the same roof and all the while be
seeing pieces from all the different continents.
While what is contained within the museum is why people visit the
Ariana Museum, the building itself is a object of beauty - built
in the style of New Renaissance. The opening hours range from 11
am to 5pm (Wednesday through Saturday and also on Monday) and from
10am to 5pm on Sunday. The museum is not open to the public on Tuesdays.
Barbier-Müller Museum, Geneva
It was in 1907 that the Barbier-Müller Museum commenced when
Josef Muller began a collection of pieces from places far a field.
The work started by Josef Muller was maintained by his family after
his death and in 1977 the public first saw the collection when the
Barbier-Müller Museum was opened. Today the Barbier-Müller
Museum houses almost 6,000 pieces which include jewelry, masks and
sculptures - pieces which mainly come from Oceania, Africa and Indonesia.
Among the most celebrated exhibits on display is a series of top
class Indonesian megalithic monuments.
Opening hours for the Barbier-Müller Museum are from 11am
- 5pm (Monday thru Sunday) and admission ranges from CHF5 for adults
to no charge for those of us who are under 12.
