Entertainment in Geneva

Geneva is a city famous for both the Arts and Culture. Among the many cultural offerings are the Opera and the Orchestra of Suisse Romande. If you are looking for great quality classical music and opera, there is a world renowned orchestra which regularly plays in Geneva.

Dance and drama are also very popular in Geneva. The Fêtes de Genève is the city's biggest annual festival of the arts. The festival is run each year during early August on the waterfront, with music of all kinds, theatre, funfairs and street entertainment of various kinds. Over the past two decades there has been a movement towards setting up new cultural centers. Many of these new cultural centers have been created out of derelict buildings. Some of these buildings are now being preserved as heirlooms and among the finer examples are the Halles de l'Ile, l'Usine, la Maison des Arts du Grütli.

Nightlife for the younger person in Geneva is unlikely to set the heart pounding. If you are looking for popular culture Geneva is perhaps not the place to come. Due to the cultured reputation of Geneva very few popular musical acts are willing to take the chance on Geneva. There are a multitude of great venues which are aimed a more towards the professional class than the younger generation. If you are looking for quality nightlife you will more than likely find yourself in Lusanne which has a more vibrant dance culture.
