Geneva's excellent Swiss restaurants often seem to be invisible
along side the many French restaurants, many of which draw their
influence from Lyon which is situated under 200km away. In the older
part of Geneva there are a number of very choice Swiss restaurants.
In the typical Swiss restaurant the fine food, fine wine and the
friendliness of the people combine to give the total experience.
Cleanliness and politeness are synonymous with both restaurants
in Geneva and the delicious food that is served up in these restaurants.
The farmland surrounding Geneva is of such a quality that the ingredients
are always fresh and of good quality. Not only are you going to
enjoy some great quality fresh food, but you will also be sampling
a taste of country life in Switzerland. Restaurants and Hotels in
Geneva take great pleasure in offering customary dishes and you
will find that many places specialize in a particular region of
Switzerland.
Among the most popular dishes is Rosti. Rosti translated into English
basically means 'fried potato' and is a favorite among the peoples
living along the Eastern boarder of Switzerland with Germany. In
the Graubunden region air dried meat is a firm favorite and in the
Ticino region you will encounter many Italian favorites. While Switzerland
is not famous for wines and its reputation pales in comparison to
its neighbor France, there are some excellent homegrown wines on
offer. It is a good idea to ask for a local wind when eating in
a Swiss restaurant as you will often find local wines go well with
local foods. These wines also come from vineyards which are often
on a par with the French vineyards and sometimes better.
